September heralds for many a season of new beginnings. For those of us who are tied to the times and seasons of the school year, this time of year is our new year. For me this new school year brings the beginning of a new job for me and my older daughter’s first year at secondary school; new and exciting adventures for us both. My job brings with it the joy of contributing to this newsletter and hopefully meeting many of the good people of the parish of Pagham over the coming year. I start full time as the Curate of St Thomas a’ Becket, Pagham on the 1st September. As curate, I am here to complete the ‘on the job’ part of my training to become a vicar; for the next four years I will be working alongside Mark and learning all that he and the people of Pagham have to teach me. Having spent all of my previous employment working in or around education it seems very normal to be starting my new job at the beginning of a new school year. After spending the summer settling down into our new house my family and I are all ready for the new and exciting challenges to come.

For many September is a time when we think about taking up a new challenge or thinking about learning something new. Evening classes are filled with people determined to master French in time for their next summer holiday. At Pagham Church we are offering people the chance to take up something new by spending some time on spiritual matters. We will be offering the Pilgrim Course in the Autumn as an opportunity for anyone who wants to spend some time pondering, discussing or probing matters of a more spiritual nature. Helpfully, unlike your local pottery or French class, each course is only six weeks long and is free to join.

The Pilgrim Course offers an opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith in three ways: scripture, tradition and culture. There is time to read the Bible and see what it actually says and consider how this might apply to your life; there is a short talk about what the Church has thought and believed over the previous 2000 years and there is time for conversation to discuss whether this has any place in your life today. The Pilgrim Course will be a good chance to ask any questions that you might have about Jesus, God or the Church. All questions are welcome and genuine differences of opinion are accepted. For more details contact the church or email We look forward to hearing from you.

In the meantime do not be disturbed if you suddenly start seeing two cars driven by strangely dressed people in clerical wear. It is just me trying to keep up with Mark as he shows me around the parish. Hopefully my youngest daughter and I will meet some of you at Wednesday Club and my husband will soon be making himself known around the Sailing club. Please do come and say hello.           Jo King
