Letter from The Vicar

Last month we had the pleasure, did we not, of witnessing Her Majesty the Queen becoming our longest-reigning monarch. Okay, I had the “pleasure” (letting slip my royalist leanings), but whatever we think of the Monarchy it is an amazing personal achievement and life’s work that Elizabeth II has managed and she shows no signs of easing off.

It gets me thinking that here in Pagham and along the south coast we are in an area popular for retirement and I fully appreciate there are a range of styles of retirement, from real rest and recreation to being busier than ever before with family, hobby or local community commitments. I am not sure I would ever have anything like the Queen’s continuing enthusiasm if and when I am at retirement age. But it is surely important that if people desire to continue work into and beyond their sixties, that they should be able to do so. (In the debate, we might also say it’s equally important that they can stop if they so wish!)

And I wonder with the Queen and indeed notable others if we might be seeing a slight shift in what sometimes has been a youth-worshipping culture. Think about Pope Francis in his late-seventies, who is full of dynamism, freshness, radicalism and able to speak with neutrality and as a unifying force on important matters such as the environment. And of course the new leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, starts this massive job at the age of 66, when many of us would be ready for winding down.

Jews and Christians, in the Ten Commandments, have the teaching, “Honour thy father and thy mother”, which we can extend to a general respect for those in authority. We know only too well in recent years, that authority has not always been worthy of that respect and the Church is as guilty in that regard as other institutions. But in a whole range of ways, such as role in the workplace or care of the elderly, it would be nice if we were regaining some sense of the wisdom and experience which can be attained and imparted through one’s advancing years.

The Queen, the Pope and Mr Corbyn are all examples of this and whether we are working formally or have entered a freer, calmer life; whether we are well or not so well, the challenge may be to remain open to what God has in store for us, to realise that God continues to have a role for us as long as the gift of life lasts.

I am reminded of an oft-used prayer for the Sovereign:

‘So replenish her with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that she may alway incline to thy will, and walk in thy way: endue her plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant her in health and wealth long to live…and finally, after this life, she may attain everlasting joy and felicity.’

This is a prayer we might all ask of God over our years.

‘Amazing Animals’

Monday 26th October 2015 from 10.00am – 3pm

It’s incredible just how many amazing animals of every shape and size lurk in the Cathedral. See how many you can track down with the aid of a colourful trail before collecting a prize on completion from the shop.

Find the Cathedral’s hidden mini mice and meet some of their animal friends.   Design and make your very own ‘character’ mini creature, (as a pirate or knight or lady or… ) in collage or clay.

There is no need to book just drop in. The cost is £2.00 per child.  There will also be a carpeted area available with soft toys for children under 3 years, who come along with their older brothers and sisters.

Why not take advantage of the Cloisters café offer of Kids Meals for £1 when an accompanying adult buys a lunch item, with a valid voucher ?

Come along and join in all the fun!
